Current Problems When Assembling Cabinets in the Field

Creating the components of your cabinets is one aspect of the job, but you also need to be able to assemble them quickly and correctly.

Many cabinet shops manufacture cabinets at one location and then assemble and install at another (the customer's home, etc).  When you flat-pack an entire kitchen's worth of cabinets so that it stacks neatly, it can quickly become confusing and frustrating to then put everything together correctly in the field.

First, Sorting the Parts For Each Cabinet

Sorting parts for each cabinet can be difficult without Thermwood's Assembly Marks

A typical nested based job consists of hundreds of parts representing perhaps dozens of cabinets, all intertwined into a series of nests.  Your first task is to separate the parts into individual cabinets.

This is normally done by placing labels on each part. Each label has a text statement with the cabinet name. Simply read the name and sort the cabinets by those names - sounds easy, right?

Not So Easy

While this sounds simple, it actually takes quite some time. You must read each label on the stacks of parts you are sorting to find the matching names for each cabinet (this can be a problem if your worker(s) don't read or speak English). This reading also takes time and parts sometimes have similar names so mistakes can be pretty easy to make.

The Solution

Time is money, and Thermwood has the solution to save you both in the form of our Patented Assembly Marks and Color Coded Labels.

Color Coded Labels Speed Up Sorting Time

A nest of parts with Thermwood's color coded labels.

Thermwood’s approach prints a color bar on each label with a different color for each cabinet. (put the red parts with the red parts and the green parts with the green parts, etc.). This simple idea allows you to sort cabinets two to three times faster. This offers a significant productivity improvement.

Bar Codes for Remaking Scrapped Parts

Each label also has a unique bar code that can be scanned to remake any damaged part(s) easily and quickly.

Thermwood's color coded labels.

Assembly Marks Speed Up Assembly Time

Thermwood's Patented Assembly Marks are a significant productivity improvement when it comes to actually putting the cabinets together. Simple cabinets are not all that difficult to assemble, but as cabinet designs become more complex, with fixed partitions, shelves or other features, determining exactly how to assemble the parts can become difficult.

Generally you must create and print assembly drawings, and sometimes even with these drawings, the process of sorting out the structure can take significant time.

How Assembly Marks Work

Cabinet parts with assembly marks are easy to put together.

Thermwood’s approach machines unique assembly marks into each joint to define which parts mate together. These marks are hidden once the parts are assembled.

Assembly marks are totally hidden when the cabinet is put together.

Non-Skilled Workers Can Easily Assemble Cabinets

Assembly drawings aren’t needed and in fact, totally non-skilled workers can easily and quickly assemble even the most complex cabinets.

One shop owner asked his cleanup man to assemble a cabinet as a test. This totally unskilled “cabinetmaker” assembled the cabinet quickly and accurately with no drawings or instructions. For most jobs this represents a significant productivity improvement that could rival the machining process itself.

The Bottom Line

Thermwood's approach can save you significant time and money through the use of Assembly Marks and Color Coded Labels to improve your accurancy and productivity when sorting and assembling your cabinets out in the field.

Thermwood incorporates smart-router technology into its nested based systems

Smart-routers may very well be the next wave in CNC routers. Just like smart phones have replaced regular phones, smart-routers may replace regular routers. Why? Because they are a lot easier to use and they make a lot more money from nested based jobs.

The big difference with smart-routers is not only do they know how to move, they also know the job they are doing. They can help in ways no simple machine can.

Smart routers easily use scrap materialFor example, when a smart-router finishes a job, it already knows how to make every part in that job, so if you need to cut a replacement part, the smart-router can do it without creating a new CNC program. In fact, they remember parts from all previous jobs. Just scan the label and it will cut it from the material left on the table. And, mentioning material left from a job, smart-routers use that material first when cutting a new job. You no longer have to throw it away or create specialized CNC programs to deal with it. It’s quick, easy and virtually automatic. It’s simple and saves the average shop thousands, if not tens of thousands of dollars in material each year that would otherwise be scrapped, and we’ve just scratched the surface.

Just like a smart phone handles dozens of daily tasks through special apps, smart-routers handle dozens of aspects of running nested based products. The list is impressive and each feature saves labor, saves material, avoids scrap and makes the whole thing so much easier.

Please click here for a detailed list of some of these smart-router features.

Thermwood CabinetShop 43 with Auto Label and Unload Options

The 2013 AWFS Show (July 24th-27th) promises to be an exciting opportunity to visit Las Vegas and see the very latest in CNC Router technology from Thermwood!

For AWFS 2013, Thermwood is proud to demonstrate our affordable CabinetShop 43 CNC Router equipped with the new optional Auto Labeling and Unload Rake System for nested based production.  This new system will be in action at AWFS 2013 in Booth #8400.

Featuring the CabinetShop 43 with New Automatic Labeling and Unload System:

Speed up Production Time

This new option helps save time by automating the process of placing labels and off-loading finished material.  The automated system quickly places the labels and then machines the parts.  It next unloads the finished material to a sorting table.  This automatic and economical addition can greatly speed up production time, and is available both on new machines and as a retrofit.

Also at AWFS we will be demonstrating a Fravol edgebander.  Fravol, known for high quality edgebanders, is exclusively represented and serviced in the US by Thermwood.

Also Demonstrating Solid Wood Machining on the Thermwood Model 45

We will also be demonstrating solid wood machining utilizing the Nemi Pod Hi-Flow System on our Thermwood Model 45

The heavy-duty Model 45 is designed for a variety of functions including the machining of rotary operations when equipped with our optional C-Axis.  This expands the capability of this already useful machine to include volutes, carvings, chair parts, stair components and much more.

Cabinet Maker Expanding into Custom-Cut Furniture

Woodsong Cabinet & Trim at 100 W. 61st St. North Suite E in Park City, is expanding from commercial millwork into custom-cut furniture.

“I see a lot of potential with it to help diversify us into another line of work, which I think is very important these days,” said Carolyn Pierce, who owns Woodsong Cabinet & Trim with her husband, Randy.

Woodsong is now a YouBuild Cut Center. Customers can select a piece of furniture online and have it cut at the local store, with or without assembly.

The furniture styles are modular, and customers can pick the type of wood, configuration, dimensions and finish at www.YouBuild.com. The order is sent to the nearest YouBuild Cut Center for cutting and labeling.

The furniture is made of American-grown lumber plywood and is formaldehyde free.

“We’re excited about this,” Pierce said. “It’s just a really neat concept, and I think it has a lot of potential for the customers.”

The company, which has been in business since 1998, had seven employees last year and is now down to three, Pierce said.

They hope the new service and partnership will help the business and allow it to hire more employees.

“If YouBuild gets up and going, there’s potential there to look to expand again,” Pierce said.

The YouBuild program is affiliated with Thermwood Corporation, a manufacturing technology company based in Dale, Ind.

WoodSong Cabinetry

Woodsong uses a Thermwood millwork machine, and that’s how the business learned about the YouBuild program, Pierce said.

Woodsong’s business has focused mainly on clinics, pharmacies, schools and similar projects. A few years ago, the company focused on packages for restaurants nationwide.

“When the recession hit, the restaurant business was one of the first to take a hit in commercial building,” Pierce said. “Since then, we switched back to local contractors and a local focus.”

Now, Woodsong is looking for local businesses to help market the custom-cut furniture.

“It’s a fairly new concept. We’re looking for a design center to get the product out here into clientele hands,” Pierce said.
